Vintage Chart for Napa Valley

2018There's great enthusiasm for this vintage, especially for Cabernet Sauvignon. Temperatures were cooler than usual, but there was continual sunshine. Harvest was up to three weeks later than average. Wines have mid weight structure and tend towards elegance rather than power. Some producers draw a parallel with 2012.14.6%
201790Difficult season with rainy periods and alternating temperatures. A heat wave at the start of September caused vines to stop development. Wildfires in first week of October were a problem for grapes that had not been harvested. Yields were low.14.6%
201694Regarded as a perfect growing season giving elegant wines, not as powerful as 2013 or overtly fruity as 2015, but perfectly balanced. A top year for Cabernet.14.9%
2015 92 Very small vintage but rich: flavor is at the forefront here, whereas tannins were at the forefront in 2013. 15.0%
2014 92 Precocious Spring, dry summer, and early harvest gave strong Cabernets, but not as tannic as 2013. Often the most aromatic character of 2012-2014. 14.9%
2013 94 Touted as a great vintage for Cabernet from an ideal season with dry, sunny conditions; the downside is high alcohol. Wines are intense, rich, and muscular: many will require some years to come around. The strong tannins of the vintage in Napa Valley are especially evident in Oakville. For Pinot Noir in Sonoma, not as good as 2012 or 2014, which are the best years for a very long time. 15.2%
2012 93 Return to classic conditions with well-structured Cabernets. Very well received with relief after several difficult vintages. Wines can be elegant, without the raw power of 2013. 14.5%
2011 86 A problem vintage because of cool weather and rain, giving lower alcohol levels and lighter wines; difficult to get the right balance with ripeness. Regarded in the region as a very poor for reds. 13.7%
2010 88 Reduced in size by problems in Spring, with cool conditions followed by heat in late summer. Said to be elegant, but sometimes a bit lacking in character. 14.1%
2009 89 Mild summer, even conditions, wines a bit on lighter side tending to softness for early drinking. 14.5%
2008 90 Reduced in size by Spring frosts, giving concentrated wines that may take time to come around. 14.8%
Vintages are rated on 100 point scale. Fourth column shows average alcohol in Napa Cabernets.
